Episode 22: Breakthroughs and Frustrations on the Road to Santana Trophy

This week, the focus was clear: get Purdey’s electrics working!

With fingers crossed (and perhaps even toes), the team pressed forward. While awaiting the arrival of a crucial electrical component, they tackled other essential tasks, determined to make progress in every way possible.

One of the major jobs was assembling the dashboard. Using parts from the original Purdey and the donor vehicle Clarissa, they reinforced the structure, creating a solid foundation for the center console that will house critical switches and controls. Small details like securing wiring grommets and fabricating mounting brackets added to the long checklist of tasks needed to bring Purdey to life.

Midweek brought a much-needed breakthrough. After plugging in a temporary electrical box, the engine cranked for the first time! Though the correct component was still en route, this discovery meant that the team was on the right path. The electrics were beginning to show signs of life, giving hope that the long-standing issues were finally being solved.

While the wiring puzzle continued, the team also tackled the recovery points. The front and rear recovery mounts were removed, cleaned and given a fresh coat of high-visibility yellow paint. Meanwhile, the rock sliders from Priscilla were prepped for installation on Purdey, ensuring additional protection for the demanding terrain ahead.

A trip to the metal shop provided another milestone—the seat box top and reinforcing plates arrived, further strengthening Purdey’s interior. These additions are important for ensuring the structure is robust enough to withstand the challenges of off-road rallying.

Finally, after much trial and error, the electrics began to show real promise. The ECU came to life and the fuel pump responded, clear signs that Purdey was inching closer to her first start. But despite these victories, other delays continued to plague progress.

The road ahead is still demanding, but the only way is forward!
