Welcome to week eight of Project Purdey! Life in rural France kept things interesting this week, starting with a frustrating power outage.
While waiting for the electricity to return, the team ventured out to source paint for Purdey’s panels. After navigating high costs and the typical slow pace of French lunchtime closures, they settled on an off-white shade that aligns perfectly with Pie’s character.
Despite early setbacks, progress was made on the brake lines. Chris tackled the final rigid brake pipe connections, referencing Delila for guidance. With the system now complete, it’s one more job ticked off Purdey’s transformation list.
Precision Alignment: String and Measurements
Aligning the bulkhead and tub required both creativity and precision. Using a simple string along the body crease and precise measurements, the team ensured everything lined up correctly. Achieving the perfect 885 mm gap between the bulkhead and tub was a painstaking but vital step.
The heater box seal, which didn’t fit despite being the “right” part number, was modified to work with Purdey’s setup. Meanwhile, the seat box underwent adjustments, including cutting and reshaping a front panel to ensure a proper fit before painting.
The wiring puzzle continued with the bulkhead loom and newly arrived wing wiring from eurospare. Key steps included placing the fuse board and starting to map out connections for the instrument binnacle, indicator stalks, and throttle pedal. Although progress was slowed by the roll cage requirements, the groundwork for the electrics is well underway.
Exciting Deliveries: Parts and Gear
This week brought several exciting deliveries:
- LED light kits and wing mirrors from eurospare to enhance Purdey’s functionality.
- Quick-release steering wheel boss ensuring ease of access with the roll cage in place.
- Driving boots, adding style and functionality for rally days
Where possible, original parts are being preserved, such as the slam panel and windscreen frame. After some straightening and cleanup, these pieces will maintain Purdey authenticity while blending seamlessly with new upgrades.
Final Thoughts
Week eight was a blend of progress and planning, as Purdey inches closer to rally readiness. From brake systems and wiring to the meticulous alignment of panels, every step brings her closer to life as a rally legend.
As the countdown board shows, there are only 150 days until Santana Trophy and 400 days until Dakar 2026. With time ticking, the team is fully focused on ensuring Purdey meets every challenge ahead.
