As Project Purdey progresses, this week has been all about two things: completing her FIA-spec roll cage and giving Priscilla some much-needed workshop time.
Priscilla’s Workshop Time
While Purdey is in England, Priscilla is under the spotlight, getting checked over for the Santana Trophy. This week, that meant fixing an oil leak in the rear hub, replacing brake pads, and tackling some stubborn electrical gremlins. The master cylinder needed topping up, and the rear light relay box has been causing some frustration—wiggle it, and it works; let go, and it doesn’t. Time for a deeper dive into the wiring!
Purdey’s Roll Cage: A Major Milestone
Over at Safety Devices, Purdey’s roll cage has been coming together in a big way. The structure is now fully welded and reinforced, featuring:
- Front windscreen reinforcements
- Dash bar fitting neatly under the steering column
- Braced roof cross members
- Door bars for added safety
- Twin rear spare-wheel mounts
With the main welding complete, the team removed the roof to lift the cage out for powder coating. And here’s the exciting reveal: it’s red!
Why Powder Coating?
Powder coating isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a highly durable finish. The metal is electrically charged, making the powder particles cling to it before the whole structure is baked at high temperatures. The result? A hard-wearing and protective coating, perfect for the rough conditions Purdey will face in the desert.
Next Stop: Demand Engineering
With her cage freshly powder-coated and reinstalled, Purdey has now moved on to Demand Engineering for the next big step: a custom-built exhaust. This means we’re inching closer to getting her fired up for the first time!
What’s Next?
- Purdey gets her exhaust system installed
- Priscilla undergoes a transfer box replacement
- More preparation as the countdown to Santana Trophy and Dakar Classic continues
This project is gaining momentum, but there’s still plenty to do.
